Copy Me.

In reading Jewelry designer Lorelei Eurto's post on copying designs, got me thinking. Copying can be a good and positive thing so long as we are aware and are acknowledging the original designer.  Another artists work can be a great jumping off place or a great source of inspiration but it truly should not be called ones own or profit be gained from another's designs. Children learn from copying so it stands to reason that when we are learning something new we "copy" to learn. I have put my designs out there for others to appreciate and learn from. So, I was thinking about it yesterday and wondered if gathering a few designers together and "copying" a design. Not copying exactly but showing how it can be deconstructed, reinterpreted, or completely redesigned. I think 5 people would be a good number to participate. So if any of you designers out there would care to join in and spread the word about "making it your own" and sharing it on your blog, post a comment and let me know. I will provide 5 of the same elements and provide a design for the jumping off point. We could set a date and share what we copied! I will choose 5 names at random by next Thursday!

  10. I would love to participate - I am just starring out so often use designs I see in books and mags as inspiration/jumping off points - and worry that I might seem like a copier :-)

  11. If you need more than 5 participants, I would love to be included. I think great designers do inspire and motivate others, they should take pride in that fact. However, what Lorelei showed us was honest to goodness copying, down to the color, type of bead, placement, materials, etc.

  13. What a great idea! Looks like you already have more than enough players, but if you decide to expand or if anyone drops out, I'd love to play, too.

  14. What a great idea, I would love if you would put my name in the hat. I agree that it is hard not to be inspired by so many of the great artists out there. I find it difficult to remember where my inspiration has come from or if it truly my own idea.
